One of the things I am missing hugely right now are nights at the theatre. I trained professionally in musical theatre at uni, I work in a theatre, and more than anything I miss the escapism it provides. Several of London’s most renowned theatre are providing free access to some of their world class productions. Find a full list below:
National Theatre at Home
The National Theatre, which in my humble opinion is one of London’s best venues, is currently allowing free access on a weekly basis to a variety of shows via YouTube. Each show will air on YouTube at 7pm on their release day. You can find them at https://www.youtube.com/user/ntdiscovertheatre. This is the timetable they have announced so far:
One Man, Two Guvnors: 02/04 – 09/04
Jane Eyre: 09/04 – 16/04
Treasure Island: 16/04 – 23/04
Twelfth Night: 23/04 – 30/04
Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre
The Globe is also offering a similar service, putting each show up on YouTube for 14 days. They are currently showing their 2018 production of Hamlet, which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdPqu598m68&. The Globe is yet to announce the rest of their streaming season.
Andrew Lloyd Webber
Sir Andrew is currently streaming some of his world class musicals on his new YouTube channel ‘The Shows Must Go On’, available here: https://www.youtube.com/theshowsmustgoon. Every Friday at 7pm the YouTube channel will live stream one of his incredible musicals which will be live for the following 48 hours, starting with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. This is definitely one not to miss out on!
The Hampstead Theatre is currently showing two productions under their ‘free to watch’ scheme, which you can find here: https://www.hampsteadtheatre.com/.
Wonderland: 06/04 – 12/04. This witty drama centers around the UK Miner’s Strikes of 1984-85.
Drawing the Line: 13/04 – 19/04. This play celebrates the strength of humanity during the partitioning of India in 1947.
I for one am certainly looking forward to taking advantage of all of these wonderful opportunites. Let me know in the comments if you take advantage of them too!
